Tom Lehrer crafted this song when he realized that if we’re going to write songs about World War III, we’re really going to have write them before the bombs destroy all of civilization. He took a first stab at the genre with So Long Mom:

Brilliant in every aspect: phrasing, lyrics, dynamics, performance, et al. How was this captured way back when, when such a fashion bereft of all the headroom, sibilance and hiss that even Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles even had to wrestle was all but impossible?
Mr. Lehrer, long before he got a long over-due second wave of recognition via Dr. Demento in the early 1980s, was not alone in artful exposition of what most of post-war, middle class America thought was inevitable.
