@lorelei: “prejudice” is making a decision before looking at the evidence. Judging the Mormon church because it encouraging its members to donate to support a bigotry law in another state, and threatening its members who voice dissenting opinions with excommunication (social suicide in Utah) is not even remotely similar.
Also, the Mormon religion is based on a book published initially as a work of fiction, and only later was it republished as a religious holy book that claims to have originated with an American being given special glasses by an angel so he could read something he unearthed written in Egyptian hieroglyphics in 1820s and transcribe it into King James’ 17th Century English. It also just so happens to incorporate portions of the book of Isaiah from the King James Bible of 1611, and incorporates translation errors that King James’ translators introduced into the original text from earlier manuscripts of the Bible, proving itself to be not just a fraud, but also a plagiarism riddled with logical holes.
So there’s not a lot there to harbor prejudice about. It’s a sham religion on the level of Scientology, just a hundred years older.
Who cares if their religion is fake? They are still entitled not to be vilified for it, and it’s well-established that they have been in the past. “Stop the Mormons” sounds to me like an appeal to that history of prejudice. Discrimination against Mormons is still discrimination, even if the victims have made themselves less sympathetic by funding a different flavor of discrimination.
Well, we had suppers in the basement of the church after a funeral and there were a lot of people, but the space was nowhere near what the space is like in those Mormon temples. You could serve dinner to half the state in those things.
Danieleran, I am sorry to tell you that you are sorely misinformed. Have you ever spoken to a member? Read the book? Read the Church’s stance on that proposition? You’re whole comment is quite factually ludacris. Please stop the insane bigotry and educate yourself before slanderizing other people that you obviously have no clue about.
@”informed” – wow what a salient deconstruction! Nothing says “pithy argument” like the glassy eyed, fact free denial of an anonymous “authority” on the web. And nothing says “bigot” like outlining the truth based on facts. Your years of milk-feeding from a single source has really “informed” you. And ’slanderizing’? Are you GWB or did you just steal his vocabulary?
Get over it. Why is everybody singling out the mormons? Why not go after the Catholic Church, christian churches, jews, and everybody else? How about we let the voters decide on Prop 8 and if you don’t like the outcome try again. It’s ridiculous to be hateful to a group that is exercising their freedom of speech. You can disagree with their beliefs but bigotry isn’t an acceptable practice.
BOYCOTT ALL THINGS MORMON, THEIR BUSINESSES, THEIR CLUBS, FRIENDSHIP, IGNORE THESE PEOPLE, AND STOP SUPPORTING THEM IN ANY WAY…. STAY OUT UTAH…THEY MADE THEIR BED NOW THE WILL SUFFER THE BACKLASH……SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE…GO AFTER MORMONS IN EVERYWAY YOU CAN
Wow.. look at all the hate.. Hate comes from those who know they are doing wrong and only try to justify themselves.. Why is it you can voice your opinion yet the Mormons can’t? If they tried to force religion on you, I bet you would be standing up for your beliefs..
I agree, Eric; bigotry is unacceptable. Which is why the Mormons are catching shit for their huge financial support of Prop 8. I disagree with singling them out over evangelicals and Catholics, both of whom also financially supported bigotry and hatred, but the Mormons did make their bed on this.
The reason why the Mormons are being singled out is not because of their religion, but because of the Mormons’ president writing letters to Mormon temples to be read out loud during religious services for all Mormons to give time and money for Proposition 8.
The Catholic church, in contrast, has homophobia, etc., but did not use the pulpit during services to organize to influence legislation (that’s what a proposition is).
The Mormon-funded campaign was also full of lies and characterizations of California law, which upset many people. But the direct connection between temple activities and the political process is unprecedented in the history of California’s Constitution.
There’s a movement now to penalize the Mormons for violating tax laws with this effort.
Hey! That’s me! Thanks for posting this. I was a member of the mormon church through Sunday, when I formally renounced my membership.
I’m focusing my protest on the mormon church because of their MASSIVE support of this initiative. Unless you’re Mormon, it really is hard to grasp what this means, and the money and manpower that went into this. Knowing that up to 77% of the Prop 8 money came from Mormon church members might start to help you understand.
EVERYONE should be afraid when one religion can come in and steamroll another group, taking away their rights, and enshrining their religious belief into law when the state has no compelling reason to discriminate.

HMMMM,,, let’s take a look at this for a moment,, You are afraid of those who can come together and *steamroll* another group because they have certain standards that they adhere to??? Sounds kinda onesided to me.. Let’s take a look at TV for instance. No matter what channel you turn to there is always some reference to SEX, Drugs, ABUSE, homosexuality being thrown in your face–because they want to desensitize people to this type of behavior and have us believe that this is normal. Also you have the liberals trying to silence the conservative radios because they want to FORCE their point of view on everyone. Listen, there will always be two sides no matter what the problem is. Darren–you ought to be ashamed of yourself, if anyone is a BIGOT it is you.
I was also featured in the channel 5 newsclip with my spouse Bill. Great job. We are all so fortunate as a nation that all these people who are spouting all this “the voters have spoken. Just suck it up…” weren’t advising Martin Luther King prior to the success of the Civil Rights Movement. Aren’t we all grateful for that?
Are you kidding me me with this made up religion and all the raciscim and the
cultish behaviors? Please lets be real look at the timelines, look at what the church and they own , none of it goes with the belief system of how to live by LDS standards it is double standard. This is not a hatred statement in anyway, just completely do not understand it. Free trade and money must be different than Vegas, pepsi, coke, coffee, shoes for a mission… Look at it! Lets not date till 16 lets marry and produce children at 18, what is the mixed message all about. this isn’t about god. What is this all about?

I really do not feel that appealing to anti-Mormon prejudice is the best way to fight anti-gay prejudice.

Yeah, as opposed to all the other non-sham religions that are all totally factually accurate and based on God’s word.
