Foreign Google Maps

Why doesn’t Google Maps give me the option to see a foreign map labeled with latin-based characters? This map doesn’t help me (though it is good to know that I’m still able to find a nearby 7-Eleven).

Negative Nancy or Negative Nelly?

Some people I know use the phrase “negative Nelly” (as in, “You don’t think I can jump across this acid filled chasm? Quit being a negative Nelly!”) and some use the phrase “negative Nancy.” This inconsistency came up in real life the other day, and today I saw one of the terms being used on South Park:

But Google apparently favors the other.

It’s possible that negative Nelly is really just a mis-remembering of nervous Nelly… or is it nervous Nancy?

Mystery Country

Without doing any additional research, I defy anybody to correctly identify this country using only Google Maps.

Ok, now that you’ve butted your head against Google, see if you can get any further using Microsoft or Yahoo.

The piece of land you’re looking at is called Nakhchivan which is not itself a country. While located entirely between Armenia, Turkey and Iran, Nakhchivan is actually “a landlocked exclave of Azerbaijan.” When scrolling through the list of known enclaves and exclaves, it becomes clear that the Azerbaijan/Armenian region is home to a large portion of the world’s enclaves and exclaves, including Barxudarli, Yuxari Askipara, Karki, Artsvashen, the rayon of Abşeron, Mingachevir, Naftalan, Shaki, Khankendi/Stepanakert, and Yevlakh. Phew.
